As well as competing on the Canadian team, Jay is involved in the organization of the sport and is President of the highly successful Collingwood Horse Show. After marrying horsewoman Shawn Carpenter, Jay moved to Canada and received his citizenship in 1985. Shawn and Jay have three daughters – Lauren, Ainsley and Reagan, who compete in the junior hunter and jumper divisions.
